Uttoxeter Canal Train
Saturday 6th April 2013
Caldon & Uttoxeter Canals Trust invite you to take an extraordinary railway journey, following the route of the derelict Uttoxeter Canal from Froghall to Jackson’s Wood. Travel by special DMU train (diesel multiple unit) to see the initial works undertaken by Waterway Recovery Group to locate the remains of Jackson’s Wood Lock and to conserve the adjacent railway bridge.
Take the Jackson’s Wood “Express” Uttoxeter Canal train on Saturday 6 April; departs 3pm from Kingsley & Froghall Station, bound for Oakamoor sidings. View this beautiful section of the Churnet Valley in springtime. There will be an opportunity to alight and walk from the railway track to view the remains of the lock.
Buy your ticket for this special train only via the CUCT website www.cuct.org.uk
Whilst this date is not a public operating day on the Churnet Valley Railway, Kingsley & Froghall Station café will be open on Saturday 6 April from 10.00 until 16.30hrs. Why not arrive early, visit the café and explore the Caldon Canal, Froghall Wharf and the restored first lock & basin of the Uttoxeter Canal? http://www.staffordshire.gov.uk/environment/eLand/RightsofWay/PromotedRoutes/ROWPromotedRoutesFroghall.aspx
This special canal train journey is also an opportunity to reflect on earlier achievements of volunteers working in partnership on the waterways that go from the Potteries to the Peak District, because this year sees:
|
the 10th anniversary of starting work on Destination Froghall (yes – it was February 2003 that WRG Forestry started on the trees in Lock 1 of the derelict Uttoxeter Canal) and: | |
|
the 50th anniversary of the start of the campaign to save the derelict Caldon: “The Caldon Project - since the Committee, [later] the Caldon Canal Society [and now CUCT], was first formed on April 4th 1963”. |
So, what better way to celebrate than a “Back to the Future” train ride alongside the Uttoxeter Canal
Perhaps take the opportunity to stay over in the area and on Sunday 7th April also enjoy a ride on the steam trains of the picturesque Churnet Valley Railway, when a service will also be running on the steep gradients of the Cauldon Lowe line through stunning moorland scenery.
